PINNING OF THE FIRST POPPY TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT - 2018.07.31

A Ceremony, inaugurating the Remembrance Day and poppy season 2018 was conducted at the Presidential Secretariat on 31st July 2018 with the participation of Hon, Maithripala Sirisena, His Excellency the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Pinning the first poppy to His Excellency President, Brigadier KA Gnanaweera President SLESA, invited His Excellency President to participate as the Chief Guest at the remembrance day parade and poppy ceremony scheduled to be held on 11th November 2018 at the Cenotaph in Viharamaha Devi Park , Colombo

President SLESA was accompanied by Major General Mahinda Ambanpola Chairman Poppy Committee, Lt Col Ajith Siyambalapitiya Honorary Secretary General SLESA, Lt Col D M Amarakoon Honorary Treasurer,Vice Presidents Wing Commander K M S Wijenayaka and Maj MA Jayarathna (Co- Chairman Poppy Committee) this simple but dignified ceremony.

COLOMBO POPPY WALK - 19.09.2018

Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association conducted its Colombo Poppy Walk on Wednesday 19th September 2018. It was a spectacular and colourful event which was guided by the Police and Military Police pilot cars. This Walk was headed by the career of the National Flag Major PH Chiltas followed by the carrier of the SLESA flag Mr. Sunil Jayarathna. This was followed by the Senior Retired Officers of the Tri Services including the President of SLESA Brigadier K A Gnanaweera, Hony. Secretary General SLESA Lt Col Ajith Siyambalapitiya, Chairman of the Poppy Committee Major General Mahinda Ambanpola

The Army, Navy and the Air Force bands also followed ahead by the contingent of Ex-Servicemen of the Tri Services who marched in unison to the music provided by the Military Bands.

The Walk that started from Galle Face Green proceeded along the streets of Colombo Fort and Pettah and ended at SLESA Headquarters. Brigadier KA Gnanaweera in his speech at the end of the walk thanked the Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Commanders of the Tri Services and the Police and the Media for their assistance given by them and also all the participants.

65th ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL - SRI LANKA EX-SERVICEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association held its 65th Annual Convention at the “Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayaka’ Auditorium, Sri Lanka Naval Headquarters, Chaitya Rd, Colombo 01 on Sunday 20th May 2018.

After the presentation of the Annual report and the audited budget 2017 to the membership, the main event of the day i.e. election of Office bearers started. This year there was keen contest for the posts of President, Secretary General & two vice Presidents.

Brigadier KA Gnanaweera was re- elected as the President for the 5th successive year and Lt Col SAK Siyambalapitiya elected as the new Secretary General. Two new Vice Presidents also were elected; Maj Gen E M M Ambanpola representing all Army Associations and Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando representing all the Naval Associations. Wing Commander KMS Wijenayake was returned uncontested for the post of Vice President representing all Air Force Associations and Lt Col D M Amarakoon was re-elected without a contest as Hony Treasurer.

The election was held under the supervision of the Pro-tem Chairman Admiral Daya Sandagiri. Maj Gen Upul Perera as the Chairman of the Election Committee conducted the election methodically and successfully with the support of the rest of his committee members. About 500 members participated at this annual event. After enjoying the fellowship and lunch Members dispersed away happily.

REMEMBRANCE DAY- 2017- 11.11.2017

“Peace and re-conciliation are essential for the development and prosperity of the country”, said the Chief Guest Hon. Speaker of Parliament Deshamannya Karu Jayasooriya speaking at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at Vihara Maha Devi Park Colombo. State Minister of Defence Hon Ruwan Wijayawardena and Secretary of Defence Mr Kapila Waidyaratna too attended the Remembrance Day Ceremony as Guest of Honour.

The ceremony began with the commencement of vigil around the cenotaph followed by two minutes silence in memory of the fallen war heroes and by religious ceremonies of all faiths.

After placing Poppy wreaths at the Cenotaph, launching of the SLESA History Book titled “Foot Prints on the Sands of Time” edited by Captain Patrick Jayasinghe and his team took place by presenting the 1st copy to Hon. Speaker by President SLESA Brigadier K A Gnanaweera.

On the Invitation of President SLESA Hon. Speaker awarded specially designed medal titled ‘Gaurawanvitha Seva Medal’ to few members representing Army, Navy and Air Force, who have rendered yeoman service to the Association.

SLESA CONFERS HONORARY TITLES

The 64th Annual Convention of the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association was held on 30th April 2017 at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake Auditorium, Naval Headquarters to elect Principal Office Bearers to the Association for 2017/2018. A special event was the award of Honorary Titles to senior members. Titles of “President Emeritus” and “President Honorius Causa” were conferred to Major General Thilak Paranagama and Capt (N) Patrick Jayasinghe, 2 senior members, respectively, honouring their exceptional services to the Association over a period of more than 15 years.

Capt Anil Bowatte, a senior serving officer of the Sri Lanka Navy, who donated his ancestral home in Kandy to SLESA for the establishment of a Veterans Home in the Hill Country also was felicitated by awarding him the Associate Membership and the Life Membership of the Association. He is the first serving Naval Officer to receive the membership with honours. The President Brig KA Ghanaweera said that this maginous gesture of a senior officer serving the Navy to be emulated. He also requested philanthropists to assist in developing this property.

Hony. Life memberships were awarded to Brig. Ranjan de Silva, Mr KL Bandusena of Sinha Regiment Association and Mr KLS Fernando, Sri Lanka Air Force Ex-Signals Association who have completed more than 10 years of exceptional Service to SLESA.

A New medal known as “Gauravanvitha Seva Padakkama” to be awarded to members who have done exceptional service to the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association also was introduced to the membership. This will be awarded in the near future.

Award of Poppy Crown (පොපි කිරුළ), an annual event, was won by Naval Association for the highest collection of funds during the Poppy season in 2016. Capt (N) Asoka Wijegunawardena, President Naval Association received the Poppy Crown on behalf of his Association for the 2nd successive year. Two staff members at the SLESA Secretariat, Ms Shyama N Ukwattage, the Chief Accountant and Mr Nishantha Uduwaka, the Admin Officer also were felicitated for 25 years of their dedicated service to the Association.

Very senior members of the association, Admiral Basil Gunasekara (former Navy Commander), Major General CJ Abeyratne, Rear Admiral Jerry Jayasuriya, Commander S Devenedra, Major General Suriyabandara, Brigadier HANT Perera and Mr HGP Jayasekere WW II Veteran too graced this occasion.

Commander of the Army, Assists Welfare Projects of Ex-Servicemen

With the objective of further promoting welfare benefits to retired tri-service personnel in the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association (SLESA), the Sri Lanka Army on the directions of the Commander of the Army, donated a financial grant of Rs 8 m to the SLESA’s welfare projects by the Adjutant General Branch.

On behalf of the Commander of the Army, the Adjutant General, Major General Shavendra Silva handed over the cheque to this effect to Brigadier (Retd) K.A Gnanaweera, President, SLESA after inviting the latter to the office of the Adjutant General on Monday (3).

The donation follows a discussion the SLESA has had recently with the Commander of the Army, during which issues pertaining to medical needs, requirements of their family members and children of those retirees were taken up, seeking assistance to carry out those obligations..

YET ANOTHER HOME IN THE CENTRAL HILLS FOR THE VETERANS OF TRI -SERVICES

Captain Anil Bowatte, a serving Naval Officer donated his ancestral Home situated at Kahalla, a picturesque village in Katugastota of Kandy District, with the noble intention of invoking merits to his dear uncle Mr. Ananda Jayasinghe and Mrs. Indralatha Bowatte to Sri Lanka Ex Ex-Servicemen’s Association on 25th February 2017 to provide residential facilities to its members.

A simple ceremony began soon after a series of religious activities concluded with an alms giving to Mahasangha which was organized by the Bowatte family. Capt Bowatte signed and handed over the deeds of the property amidst chanting of Sethpirith by Mahasanga to President SLESA, Brig KA Gnanaweera.

Representing the Commanders of Tri Services, Brig Priyantha Napagoda (Army), Lt Commander Kumara (Navy) and Gp Capt Asoka Warakanga (Air Force) too participated at this important ceremony. President SLESA addressing the gathering thanked Capt Bowatte and his family members for the noble act of donation to SLESA aimed at the welfare of ex-servicemen and women. A cross section of the members of SLESA headed by Hony. Secretary General, the Vice Presidents and Hony Treasurer too attended the ceremony.

OPENING OF THE NEWLY REFURBISHED / RECONSTRUCTED BUILDING COMPLEX AT THE VETERANS’ HOME BY THE COMMANDER OF THE ARMY - 2oth January 2017-NOV-2016

The Commander of the Army Lt General AWJC De Silva opened the building complex refurbished / reconstructed by the Corps of Army Engineer Services on 20th January 2017.

He also opened the Medical Centre for the veterans and the General Sir John Kotalawala Memorial Community Centre.

11TH TSUNAMI MEMORIAL

It is eleven years since the occurrence of the Tsunami devastation on 26th December 2004 (Boxing day). A memorial service with the participation of all religions was held at Peraliya, where a train carrying approx 1500 passengers got caught to the large tidal waves , taking the lives of nearly 1300.

A special train carrying 20 Buddhist priests chanting Pirith in a specially constructed mandapaya and other passengers driven by the same engine No.591(which got caught to the tsunami on that fateful day). The Deputy General Manager Operation Vijaya Samarasinghe and Supervisor M.A. Cooray , who was responsible for the repair of that train also participated. On arrival at Peraliya religious observances were conducted and thereafter members of the Army, Navy, Police and Scout also paid their respect. Some poor children were gifted with school utensils. Southern Province, Deputy Director of Disaster Management Major Daulagala and Southern Province MP Venerable Baddema Samitha, mahe sangha, relatives of victims and villagers of the area also participated. This event was organized by the Railway Department, Bank of Ceylon Buddhist Society and the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association.
